That sore, achy feeling is called delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. It typically sets in a day or two after working the muscles harder than normal, like in a race, or in a slightly different way, like after learning a new fitness move or adding more weight or repetitions to a workout.

The increase in duration or intensity of exercise causes microscopic tears in the muscle fibers. Inflammation forms around the tears and causes increasing discomfort for 24 to 48 hours. It’s a normal part of the process and indicates that muscles are adapting to and getting stronger from the exercise. The discomfort of DOMS should be minor, but that’s not always the case.
